Researches at Iowa State University have recently found that lifting weights for as little as one hour every week may reduce risk of heart attack or stroke by as much as 40-70%. “People may think they need to spend a lot of time lifting weights, but just two sets of bench presses that take less than 5 minutes could be effective,” said Duck-Chul Lee of Iowa State University. Spending more than an hour in the weight room did not yield any additional benefit, the researchers found. The data obtained from nearly 13,000 adults further indicated that you do not have to meet the recommended guidelines for aerobic physical activity, running, walking or other aerobic activities in order to witness the heart attack risk reduction; weight training alone is enough. “The results are encouraging, but will people make weightlifting part of their lifestyle? Will they do it and stick with it? That’s the million-dollar question,” said Lee. To find out more about the details of this research, please refer to Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, 2018.
