Having someone at home who is dealing with a bedsore, ulcers or other types of wounds? Even though frequent visits by skilled nurse are always recommended, there are several simple, yet very helpful, actions that your caregiver can take at home which drastically facilitate the wound healing process. Here are a few tips to keep in mind for improved wound healing:

Make sure to consume enough of the following Power Foods :

  • High Mineral Zinc Foods such as Red meat, Shellfish, Chickpeas, Lentils, Seeds, Nuts, Dairy, Eggs, Whole grains, These foods promote new tissue generation to replace the wounded tissues.
  • High protein Foods such as Chicken breast, Lean beef, Egg whites, Oats meals, Cottage cheese, Quinoa, Almonds, Milk, These foods help body to repair damaged tissues in/around the wounded areas.
  • High Vitamin A Foods such as Carrots, Sweet potatoes, Winter squash, Apricots, Spinach, Kale, Cantaloupe, etc. These foods help with tissue repair process.
  • High Vitamin C Foods such as Papaya, Citrus fruits, Strawberries, Bell peppers, Broccoli, Brussels sprouts, Kale, etc. These foods provide essentials for maintaining and strengthening the immune system, and minimize infection on and around the wounded tissues.
  • High L-Arginine Foods such as Turkey, Pork loin, Chicken, Pumpkin seeds, Soybeans, Peanuts, Dairy, Chickpeas, Lentils, These foods can improve insulin sensitivity in diabetic patients going through wound healing process.

Make sure that your wounded areas are covered by proper Wound Dressing :

  • Collagen wound dressing can be used for chronic or stalled wounds, ulcers, bedsores, transplant sites, surgical wounds, second degree or higher burns and wounds with large surface areas.
  • Hydrogel wound dressing can be used for wounds with little to no excess fluid, painful wounds, necrotic wounds, pressure ulcers, donor sites, second degree or higher burns and infected wounds.
  • Hydrocolloid wound dressing can be used on burns, light to moderately draining wounds, necrotic wounds, under compression wraps, pressure ulcers, venous ulcers, among others.
  • Alginate wound dressing can be used for moderate to high amounts of wound drainage, venous ulcers, packing wounds and pressure ulcers in stage III or IV.
